6 Things I am Grateful for (But not Exactly Excited About) for the Last Two Days

1. When guys publicly claim feminism- Someone sent me this clip on Tuesday after we talked about my questions/ concerns/ excitement for raising a boy as a feminist. I am not saying that celebrity endorsements (or dismissals) of feminism should be mistaken for anything overly important, but I think it is valuable to have people we perceive as cool be non-chalant, yet smart about their personal stakes in feminism. And can I say, in the face of this truly awful summer where women have been treated as pawns by a number of radical conservative fronts (Isis, Boko Haram, even the increasingly violent radical pro-lifers), you have to ask, conservative or liberal, why you wouldn't be a feminist. I can't imagine anyone would disagree (clearly they do, but its hard to imagine it, especially from women) that women should be denied education or feel threatened with violence in public spaces. Really, if you aren't a feminist, why the hell not?

2. Debates around mental illness- Oh vey, it feels like a conversation we have now had too many times, but based on some of the reactions around Robin Williams's death, clearly it still need to be said. Mental illness is a disease, like cancer or parkinson's or arthritis; having a mental illness doesn't reflect your character or strength or selfishness. It's disappointing that these sorts of things need to be said, but it is encouraging that so many people are saying it.

3. Jezebel's finally getting rid of the comment rape gifs- I think it was 2 weeks ago that I saw the first of these genuinely horrible gifs on a Jezebel comment section (about Conor Oberst maybe?), and it ruined my day. I mean, I was so upset all day. I have never seen something like that, and I really never needed to. Online forums like Gawker media or Twitter (who has been forced to deal with this when nasty trolls were disgusting toward Zelda Williams, including putting fake images of her father's body on her responses) need to come up with better solutions to counter these responses. The internet has only become a more nasty space for both men and women (yeah, women might get it worse, but I can't imagine guys want to see this stuff either), and comment sections clearly need some sort of change. I have been avoiding the jezebel site (and especially their comments) since the incident, and I was shocked when I read that their primarily female writing staff is supposed to delete these gifs one by one, thereby having to look at them all. No one should have to do that, and there has to be a better way. So I hope they work it out, and the trolls can retreat to their bridges.

4. Chuck Ramirez Candy Tray Series- My favorite genoming subject this week are these large-scale, highly-detailed photographs of empty candy trays. They feel happily familiar and sad all at once, not unlike opening a candy box which is totally emptied out (or only has the weird ones left, and you have to debate whether it is worth it or not).

5. This bald, cancer-battling bride- Style me Pretty posted a blog earlier this week that has now gone viral of a bride who went totally bald (with a gorgeous lace cap) to her wedding, mid-cancer treatment. It made me cry, but basically anything that mentions cancer in any way makes me cry now. The honesty and beauty of this woman is also just really inspiring.

6. The power of "social media" in the face of nastiness- The Michael Brown story is devastating. An unarmed 18 year old was shot down by a (still unknown) police officer. The officer was pulled from the scene immediately to protect his identity, and the man's body was left out on the cement in August for over 4 hours. I feel the outrage there is well-justified, and people deserve answers about how and why this happened, not the threat of extensive and shocking violence. What seems even more shocking in this day and age is how much effort the Ferguson police seemingly put into removing media from the event, trying to keep it quiet, etc. Stories like these do make me glad to live in the time we do, where various live feeds have been up this week (though last I saw, they are mostly down right now) to make the situation much clearer. As horrible as the whole story is (I mean, no one looks great here, but the city's police look really really bad), it makes me grateful that people have so many tools available to make their voices heard, so the various sides of the story can all be publicly represented.

A Fun Day Out at the Bristol Vintage Wedding Fair

Dear Reader

On Sunday I had the most enjoyable day out at the Bristol Vintage Wedding Fair, which takes place every year at Bristol Zoo. It's one of my favourite events in the vintage wedding dresses' calendar.
Heavenly Vintage Wedding Dresses at Bristol Vintage Wedding Fair 2014
The fair is organised by Ali, a most lovely and well organised lady, and is always a great success. I took about fifty of my original vintage dresses with me, here are a few shots of my stand.

Phew! All set up just in time for the lovely crowds to arrive...
And I was helped by my ace team: my sister Kathy who is invaluable on my stand, and my clever photographer husband Robert who took all the pictures. (You can see more of his wonderful wedding photography here.)

Let me tell you about some of the nice people I met, with their quirky ideas for making weddings special. First, Steph from Sweet & Pretty who sets up sweet tables to keep your guests amused - especially the children I imagine! I was stopped in my tracks by the smell of all the delicious offerings.

Steph had some beautiful floral arrangements on her stand done by Adele who has her own business called Tin Can Floral. I love flowers and I really thought Adele had a great touch with the delicate little grouping of arrangements.

Opposite my stand was a lovely lady called Delia from Flo-Jo, who had a fun idea for hen parties: lovely vintage-knicker-making parties! Here are some pretty shots of her stand and the lady herself!

I then spotted a very pretty vintage-styled model and asked Robert to photograph her; it’s always good to have a bit of vintage style inspiration! I was impressed by her feather headpiece, made by Tricia Hamilton, it was a perfectly balanced little thing and suited the model so well.

The model is Lauren, and the dress is by Pearl Bespoke. The lovely vintage hairdo is by Fiona at Beehive Brides, and I did notice it stayed very nice all day!

I mentioned that the vintage wedding fair is organised by Ali, who also has a company hiring out vintage crockery. I'll leave you with some pictures of her gorgeous vintage china, and if you love them, you can find lots more on her website here.

3 Things I Love Today- Balpreet Kaur, Jellyfish Tattoos, and Lunches with Friends

from www.theguardian.com

1.  Balpreet Kaur- Ok, it is already established that I love women with beards (Hello, Jennifer Miller!) because I think the act of keeping that beard is so radically defiant of gender norms and kind to themselves. These women treat themselves with absolute courage and love (so whether God gave you a beard or not, you can learn from that). Balpreet Kaur is a sophomore at Ohio State who honors her own Sikh traditions (the 5 K's) including kesh, where one does not cut her hair. She said of her decision:

"Yes, I realize that my gender is often confused and I look different than most women. However, baptized Sikhs believe in the sacredness of this body - it is a gift that has been given to us by the Divine Being [which is genderless, actually] and, must keep it intact as a submission to the divine will,"

Treating her body as a sacred gift is certainly not a foreign idea to anyone raised in any religious context, but most of us cast off tenets to conform to contemporary standards of beauty. To have that kind of commitment as a 19 or 20 year old is so inspiring. She definitely wins my "Badass of the Day" award.
from timmytattoo.com/‎

2. And in support of defiling your body, the most beautiful tattoo in the world. Jellyfish tattoos mostly aren't that great, but this is wonderful.
3.Unexpected lunch with an old friend- my old college roommate Chris were on Stanford campus today, so we went to get lunch in Menlo Park. It was really nice to get to chat with him (especially because I didn't feel like I got to see him much at our wedding). It was generally a pretty good day- good meeting with my adviser, got to see people from school I really like to see, and I got to wear my boots (which destroyed my feet, but we will work on that.

3 Things I Love Today- Raspberry Popsicles, Romans 12:9, and Durer's sketches and etchings

1. Raspberry popsicles- We got a Zoku popsicle maker as a wedding gift, and it has changed our life. It is so simple to use, and now we know actually unstrained fruit juice and a teensy bit of sugar makes the best popsicles in the whole world. Delicious, amazing, and it at least feels not too terribly bad for you. At least not as bad as cake, which is what we would usually be eating.
2. This- "Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. 11 Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them. Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all!"-Romans 12:9

3. Anything Albrecht Durer ever made- Italian Renaissance is grossly overrated. Check the North, people. I've been looking at his sketches and etchings today for inspiration. So incredibly detailed and beautiful. Like looking at a photograph hundreds of years before they were invented.

3 Things I Love Today- Dianne Wiest, Raspberry Popsicles, and our New Fancypants Buffet!

from www.imdb.com/title/tt0093818
from www.woodyallen.info/2011_11_01_archive.html‎

1. Dianne Wiest in Woody Allen movies- I know she doesn't have the reputation for being one of his greatest muses or anything, but she is fantastic in Hannah and her Sisters. I watched Radio Days tonight (maybe my second favorite Woody Allen movie now), and she is just so good yet again. I mean I can name about ten other things I love her in, and I think because of the kind of veneer of sweetness, she is generally an underated actress, but she just radiates a strength and intelligence in her performances (think Edward Scissorhands). A great example of femininity being successful and strong on its own terms. Can you tell I love her?
2. Raspberry popsicles- a popsicle maker has now become the big surprise success wedding present. I could eat a raspberry popsicle literally every day for the rest of my life.
from www.potterybarn.com/products/benchwright-buffet/‎

3. Buying a buffet- this is the biggest purchase we have made as adults, so it was pretty exciting. The Boy has agreed to stay in our super cheap apartment if we can get more kitchen storage (and therefore counter space), so this became the number one priority. So rather than paying an extra 4000 dollars a year in rent (that is not playful exageration... that is the truth) we are putting some chunk of that money toward furniture we can hopefully use forever. I am also happy that rather than scale up, we are figuring out how to best manage our small space. Sizing up is greatly overrated, and we have the rest of our lives to have more space than we can manage. Anyway, our (ok, his) new army of kitchen gadgets has found a home, and our apartment is about to have one more piece of furniture that we actually picked out instead of inherited! So, that's grown up I guess.

Wedding Wednesday- Final Thoughts on Gift- Giving

from www.amazon.co.uk/The-Monster-Factory
Alright, one of the other things I couldn't really talk about during the process of preparing for the wedding was gift giving! This, to me, is a very important part of any event, because I just genuinely love giving presents. I feel like it gives me an opportunity to show people how much we love/ appreciate them, so we spent a lot of time/ discussion on what would be a good gift to give.

As a bridesmaid, you basically always get the same gift- the jewelry you wear for the wedding.

I tried to get them jewelry that was really cool and special- I bought them from Jennifer Jones Jewelry on Etsy ( you can find her shop here- http://www.etsy.com/shop/JenniferJonesJewelry?ref=seller_info). The ones for our wedding were in all of our colors and had all sorts of neat vintage earrings on them. I felt kind of torn about them once I got them, because they were so my style and not the girls, necessarily, but I think they liked them. I had spent a long time deciding which bracelet for which girl, and at least my sister-in-law Elizabeth wanted to know why I picked hers for her, so that kind of curiosity was fun.

etsy.com

I would highly recommend Etsy to brides who are looking for cool original jewelry that perfectly matches the style of their wedding. We were going for a kind of light late 40's/ 50's feels for our bridal party, so I went with these big retro looking studs for their earrings. I found them at a wide variety of stores, almost all of whom were pleasant and easy to deal with. Every girl got different flowers for their ears, and I think they were a nice simple foil to the otherwise kind of busy get ups. Plus, I figured that the earrings might actually be wearable again, even if the bracelet wasn't.

My mom and I had decided that we would pay for the girls' hair, so that pretty much ate up the bridesmaid budgets, but the boys were getting such a fun gift that I wanted to get the girls something fun too! So I had the idea, thanks to think geek, to get them all weird cookie cutters (the original idea was to get them all ninjabread cookie cutters like the top picture!). I decided that since many of them are more functional adults than I am, I would try to mix in silly and sentimental cutters with ones that they may actually use. The only person who got all silly ones was Elizabeth, because she is 17 and therefore is at about the same maturity level as I am. The cookie cutters reminded me of many of the times that my MOH and I made cookies with our Nana.

I think cookie cutters work because who doesn't like making cookies? Even better ones that have some silliness and joy? It is one of my favorite things to do, and I weirdly have silly baking memories with a lot of my bridal party. Something like that also offers you the opportunity to give everyone equal but personalized gifts.

etsy.com
The last thing I gave the girls was a pez dispenser with a disney princess theme. Over the years, the boy and I had joked about an elaborate wedding at Franklin High School track with Celine Dion on a crane that was Disney Princess/ sin themed. I had a couple of throwbacks to that wedding planned, but the biggest one was that each of the girls got their pez dispenser (my brother had bought me the set about 5 years ago) and a little cupcake charm (also from Etsy) to attach to their bouquet. The cupcake charms were cute, but they were kind of a fail, because they fell apart all day long- mine even fell apart at the altar!

The boy had a much easier time choosing the gifts for his groomsmen (I want to point out here that we used the tissue paper as wrapping material... which I will be doing for the rest of my life). He and his brother (and their friends) had played with legos together since they were kids, and the legos have been making more and more of a comeback over the last year. My brother is also into legos, so really the only person who wasn't crazy into it was The Boy's oldest brother Johnny. I am pretty sure they had pulled him over to the dark side by the end of the wedding.

The legos were a pretty big hit, except for Pete who wanted us to get him a different set. He had helped me wrap them all, but he did such a good job keeping them all a secret. He is awesome!

For guys, there are less accessories you need to provide, but leave it to us to make it more complicated. We bought them all robot socks, which I think looked a little bit more like monsters than robots. We also got them their bow ties and suspenders, since the odds are they won't be getting much repeat usage out of them.

Despite Jim's face in the picture, they mostly seemed pretty pumped about wearing the bow ties. I thought they looked pretty sharp and adorable, so I am glad I took a stand for the bow tie.

The last group we wanted to really give something great to was our parents. It turns out there aren't many traditions or guidelines of what you give to your parents (much less stepparents) for your wedding so we tried to have a good time with it. But all of our parents had been ridiculously helpful, supportive, and enthusiastic en route to our wedding, so it was very important to me that we put some thought into their gifts.

Because we had two big Harry Potter fans on our hands, we gave both our Mom's Harry Potter wands! Well, technically MIL got a Molly Weasley wand and my Mom got a McGonagal wand. I think they liked them a lot. If you want to buy someone a wand I would highly recommend this store- http://www.etsy.com/people/SticksAndKicks. We also got The Boy's parents a family tree from Etsy, which I thought turned out really beautifully.

etsy.com
My mom was the only parent we instantly knew what we wanted to get her- she has wanted this kind of Hawaiian bangle for a long time, so I saved up to get her one for the wedding. We debated between this number and another one with flowers on it, but my Aunt Ann felt like she would like this one better. I also got a set of coral print for my mom's husband, who is big on the scuba diving.

I had the hardest time shopping for my dad- I got him an embroidered tissue, and we got his wife a necklace charm of her dog Big, but we needed to do something else. We talked about getting them a nook kitchen table, or a hammock, but eventually we got them a gift card for a verizon store, because they both have ancient phones, and my Dad's was truly terrible. It was a more practical gift than I usually get, but once I thought of it I was pretty proud of the idea.

Ok, so now that I do this, I realize that a lot of this would probably not be that helpful for brides making plans. So, my advice for the gift-giving is to take your time with it. I am not sure it even makes some of those wedding checklists, but it is worth your time to start putting thoughts and money aside as you go. I think it is also great if you can connect the gifts to the larger goals of the wedding, because you usually give them on the night before- they help set the tone, so if you are going traditional, do traditional gifts! If you want a serious party feel, do shot glasses or something silly like that! These people, in theory, are the closest to you of anybody, so think about them and want they might want or need. I feel like it is an important part of of the wedding to show people you appreciate them, and honestly one of my regrets is that I didn't do that more, so I am glad we had this chance. It really is worth the effort, I promise!

3 Things I Love Today- Frankenstein Cakes, Disposable Cameras, and Matt Paxton

from www.randomtuesdays.com/frankensteins-monster-cake/‎
1. This cake- I will figure out how to make this cake if we go home for Halloween. I love it!!! Bonus points to them for the bolts on the side. That is thorough.

 2. Our disposable camera pictures- Ok, I am willing to estimate about 50% of the pictures look like grey blobs. Thank goodness for digital cameras, because they really helped us all. Still, the ones that are left are just hilarious and it really made us feel like people had fun at our wedding! Thank goodness! Plus, its like every few days since the wedding, we have had another influx of pictures. It will be so sad when it is over!
 3. Matt Paxton, Extreme Cleaning Specialist- That guy takes no nonsense. He is always with the blonde lady with the scary eyes, but he is pretty damn awesome at his job.

3 Things I Love Yesterday- Gogol Bordello, Tater Tots, and Making Progress

from www.rottentomatoes.com/m/everything_is_illuminated/

from lyricstranslate.com/en/gogol-bordello-lyrics.html‎
from weheartit.com/entry/2170687
1. Eugene Hutz- I watched Everything is Illuminated again yesterday, and his performance is just beautiful. The movie has some direction issues, but his performance is funny and sad and has so much depth. He really is great. Then, that clever Netflix recommended a documentary about his gypsey punk band Gogol Bordello, and it made me love him more. That man is a spectacular force of nature. He has a very fresh perspective and relentless energy and thoughtfulness. That was what I was most struck by, his loving nature toward many of the people around him and his belief that as long as he could make things out of nothing, he was successful. Plus, he has very cool style. I am sure everyone has heard "Start Wearing Purple" but check out some of the band's other music, and watch Everything is Illuminated.

2. Tater tots- we got them as part of our wedding diet detox (oh yeah, just going crazy over here!) and they are pretty awesome.
3.Making Progress- I finally made some leeway on the paper I need to get done because I present it now in less than a week! Nothing like diving back into grad school.
