Vintage Wedding Dress Trends for 2015 - Number 2.

Dear Reader,
The second trend I'd like to draw your attention to is…

2. VINTAGE LACE CAPES AND COATS

In my London studio, brides are definitely moving away from shrugs and boleros this year, and asking for a softer style of lace cover-up - particularly vintage lace capes.

This elegant style may have originated in the Victorian era, but the height of its popularity was the 30s, when a fashion for short lace capes really took off - like the beautiful example I found for lovely bride Leah (below) to pair with an original 1930s wedding dress.

Like many 1930s fashions, it was reinvented in the 1960s and early 1970s when long lace capes - sometimes with hoods - came right back into style. I was recently asked to source a dress to complement a full-length hooded lace cape from 1972, which originally belonged to my client's mother. Fabulous!

Long lace coats are also very in-demand right now. This is a more 1940s look - as you can see on the example above and below, with its sensational long lace train.

I do love a challenge, sourcing something to match a client's own personal piece. Mixing and matching eras can work incredibly well, and these beautiful styles can look gorgeous over dresses from any era. I don't think you have to be strict about it!

A 1940s-style vintage wedding dress for a cool Spring day.

Dear Reader,
Choosing a vintage wedding dress for an English spring wedding can be a challenge. Of course, it must be gorgeous and glamorous. But it also needs to cover enough skin for our goosebump-inducing climate!

Actually, I love winter and spring weddings. They're a great opportunity to wear elegant long sleeves and high necks that may simply be too hot in summer. And with this in mind, I've recently made some updates to the Florence dress from my Heavenly Collection of vintage-inspired wedding dresses
The original Florence vintage-style wedding dress, with puff sleeves

This lovely new Florence has long satin sleeves, set into beautifully detailed shoulders. And the glamour quota stays high with the addition of a subtly sexy keyhole back – just enough to reveal a glimpse of skin.

I've also introduced a stunning new colour, Sea Pearl – that positively glows in the light of a cold day.

Spring and winter weddings also offer a wonderful choice of vintage accessories. Feathers or fur? Winter blooms in icy hues, or freshest spring flowers? The options are so romantic.

Try a feather wrap like my own above – made from ostrich and marabou. Or this beautiful swan feather wedding cape from Not on the High Street. Or fur is fabulous – whether a real vintage piece or faux if you prefer...

A cosy faux fur jacket or shrug can also work perfectly with a short-sleeved dress, such as Florence (below) with a lace flutter sleeve. I love the real vintage bride in the photo above – teaming her dress with that super-fabulous faux fur!

If you like real fur, you can find wonderful vintage fur wraps and shrugs at Central Park Vintage. Another great place to seek out a fur or faux fur shrug is The Hammersmith Vintage Fair – I am a regular visitor for their great selection of accessories.
Glorious pale blooms for an early Spring wedding.
And each version of Florence works beautifully with the current vogue for natural accessories. From the beautiful blooms from Brides.com to these stunning nature-inspired headpieces by Abby at Cherished.

Nature-inspired hair accessories complement a vintage wedding dress
As pretty as real snowdrops! Delicate head-pieces for a vintage style wedding.
I am used to seeing beautiful hair accessories, but I've not seen anything quite like these by Abby at Cherished before - they are small works of art and could have been made to go with the Florence dress. (I can't wait to feature more of them very soon!)
Lovely 1940s-inspired Florence wedding dress, from my Heavenly Collection.
I hope my brides and my readers will love the elegant new member of the Florence family, as much as the original puff-sleeved and flutter-sleeved versions! If you'd like to make an appointment to see Florence in person, do contact me!

And I've hope you've enjoyed these ideas for vintage-inspired late winter and early spring weddings!

It's your perfect vintage wedding dress. Why cover it up... right?

Dear Reader,
From lace bolero to marabou stole, the right cover-up is a fabulous addition to your vintage wedding dress - adding an extra layer of glamour or sophistication. Let's look at a few delicious examples…
Ostrich and Marabou Stole, priced £150
First, this super-glamourous ostrich and marabou stole, turning a demure and simple satin dress into a fabulous 1940s showstopper…!

Next, these beautiful capelets adding such pretty and individual style to a full-length lace 1930s wedding dress. The first and second images show an original Victorian lace capelet - these are now very rare, so I'm delighted to have found it!

And the image below is real vintage bride Leah, who chose this stunning 1930s capelet with her 1930s lace dress. You can see a full feature on Leah's wedding here.
Finally, I've worked hard to create the ultimate solution: a cover-up to complement almost any vintage wedding dress. From my own Heavenly Collection, here is the Colette bolero in delicate lace, created to prettily cover any exposed skin...
Colette is shown here in French lace with a guipure lace trim. It can be ordered in a range of different laces, to ensure it's the perfect complement to any vintage dress.
So whether you're adding a layer to create very different looks for day and night, or simply looking for a little more coverage, do consider what a cover-up has to offer. Just contact me if you'd like to know more or to see any of these gorgeous pieces.

A GUIDE TO VINTAGE LACE WEDDING DRESSES Part 2: the story of modern lace

Dear Reader

I didn't realise how much I love vintage lace until I started sourcing the perfect fabrics for my own collection of vintage inspired wedding dresses

My search took me to specialist ateliers all over the world, where I became completely absorbed in the beauty of the vintage and reproduction lace I saw.

On my vintage wedding blog today, I'd like to share a little of what I learned and show you some beautiful examples.

The best lace is a blend of cotton and synthetic fibres. Cotton keeps its shape and colour over time and gives a firm feel and structure. Synthetic fibres add strength. This marriage of beauty with strength is perfect for recreating vintage wedding dresses.

Lace first became fashionable during the 1500s, when all lace was handmade, and was highly prized for both men and women as it was so labour-intensive. An extravagant gentleman's lace ruff (popular in Elizabethan times) required over 40 metres of lace, which would take one person a whole year to make. No wonder it cost the equivalent of several acres of good land!

Fashionable ladies made their own, and the skill of lace-making was a very desirable attribute in a wife! It continued as a rich lady's pastime or a 'cottage industry' for over 300 years, until the Industrial Revolution.

In the 1800s, lace-making machines were invented in England. Suddenly lace was available on a wider scale, and Nottingham became the lace-making centre of the world. My Butterfly and Angel dresses, below, use lace made specially for me by one of the oldest family firms in Nottingham. This original vintage style from the 1930s used to be called 'English Net'.

By 1809 new machinery could replicate hand-made lace. But in 1813 came the biggest change of all: John Leavers invented the 'Leavers machine' in Long Eaton in the East Midlands. Lace became affordable, and a thriving industry sprung up making 'Leavers lace'.

Leavers lace is still the kind most used by couture houses, notably Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Dior, Etro, Yves St Laurent, Paul Smith and even Vivienne Westwood

The next development happened when the Leavers machine was smuggled to France - broken up in parts disguised as scrap metal! This made lace even more popular as the French competed with the English lace industry, and created an amazing variety of patterns.

Today the French lace making industry is still centred around a small area of Northern France, in towns like Chantilly, Valenciennes, Alencon and Cluny. The industry has been kept alive by the passion of its local workers, who have stepped in to buy the machinery themselves when faced with closure.

In turn, the machines were sold to Far East producers and lace production in France was scaled back. Now the Far East creates wonderful lace too. Amazingly, all modern Leavers lace is still produced on the same machinery, invented 200 years ago!

And English lace has become a luxury once more, with just a handful of small companies producing it. For more on the modern English lace industry, there's an interesting BBC feature here

For my Heavenly Collection of vintage inspired wedding dresses, I use lace from all these different sources - choosing the best from ateliers in Nottingham, France and Japan.

I've included some of my original vintage wedding dresses above, too, to show a variety of lace. Some of these are no longer available - but I always have lots of beautiful lace vintage dresses at my studio in West London (as well as my own collection of reproduction vintage dresses). Do come and have a look! To make an appointment, just contact me here

Thanks to Abby at Cherished for the loan of her beautiful headwear, to the lovely Robert Lawler for photography. And to you, dear reader, for stopping by today!
