3 Things for Today- Growing Up, Grappling Mandalas, and the End of Summer

1. Prepping for my first time as interviewer- In the past year and a half, I have been on so many job interviews, and I think I have mastered that part. Tomorrow, I have to give an interview to someone who would like to intern for the CoCA archive. Looking forward o learning more about her, and also potentially having an intern! Moving up in the world.

2. Joseph Peragine's Grappling Mandala- I love a good wrestling picture. This is not even a little bit a joke. When I shot photos all the way back for my high school yearbook, my favorite events even then to work were wrestling matches because they are just so sensual and awkward, and the bodies do all sorts of beautiful ugly things. Watching wrestling forces you to reflect on what a weird thing the human body is designed to be. I love Peragine's series of paintings for embracing the strangeness and humor of wrestling. Favorite Artsy find for the day.
3. That summer is on the way out- I know so many teachers prepping for the early start, but I am so excited to start my favorite season. Also, it has just reused to stop being hot. Too much, Seattle. Too much.

Today's Inspiration- Umbrellas in Portugal

Since we are going home to a town that is fueled by great community events and culture, I thought my inspirations this week would focus on public art in small towns. I think people who have only ever lived in big cities often (wrongly) believe that the only art-making worth seeing happens in large cities (New York and LA if they are particularly uppity), but anyone who has a smaller hometown knows this is crazy talk. Art in these kinds of spaces (like the alley murals in Franklin) can play off of collective visions and the kind of collaboration that doesn't happen in the same way in cities. Economists have also noted that investment in the arts fuel development in these places. I love seeing art pieces, monuments, temporary exhibits in smaller places, and they deserve more attention. Does anyone have any great examples of this? Please send it my way if you do!

Alright, if you are on pinterest, you have probably seen this before, but you may not know the story behind it. These umbrellas go up in the streets of Agueda Portugal every July (for only 3 years.. that's how quickly it has caught on) for their arts festival- Agitagueda. To try to attract more people to their hot streets for the festival, this installation was planned to create more shade and cover the city in color. The plot has made Agueda and its once "unimportant" art scene into a bucketlis destination for pinners and art lovers alike.

9 Light Things for this Weekend

I am currently processing the last round of Ferguson violence, and I genuinely cannot get over that an officer shot a young man, practically a boy, maybe from his car, SIX TIMES, then didn't call it in, left the body outside to rot and be seen for FOUR HOURS. Then, the fact that they have the gull to try to suggest he maybe stole cheap cigars (maybe) from a convenience store as if that justifies killing him. Ugh ugh ugh ugh. Also, how do they get off keeping this officer on paid leave? And not just apologizing for goodness sakes? Or trying to use the actions of a few people to tear gas crowds of children and try to lock out the press? Anyway, I am just spewing now, as I basically have been to the Boy all weekend (I gave up blogging last night because I was following live feeds), so I am going to pick lighter things for this and will write more about Ferguson later.

1. Buying the Boy a Baby Wrap for our Anniversary- I got him a Solly Baby wrap? They seem like pretty simple ones, and I am hoping he really likes baby carrying. I gave up doing the one on Uncommon Goods where you wrap your baby in tortilla. I don't entirely understand how someone turns a scarf into one of these things, but I am sure by the time our spawn arrives, we will have figured it out.

2. That someone in the world bought this for their baby- I love those people and would like to be their friends. That takes some panache. I would like to believe the nursery is either Flinstones or Meret Oppenheim- themed.

3. "Do we Look Fat in These Suburbs?" on The Atlantic- This article on urban/ suburban planning and it's correlation with obesity articulates an issue I have thought about a lot in a much more substantiated and cogent way (though I don't see the point of coming down on Fitbits). So much of our activity level depends on the spaces in which we live, and cities (and I think small towns) encourage active movement whereas suburban spaces, you never see people walking. Los Angeles also always blows my mind, because the weather remains so consistently beautiful, but because of its sprawling layout, people mostly don't walk. This issue is obviously very complicated, but being aware of how public space encourages or denies just walking places can help us understand ways to better address it

4. The Announcer of Fantasia- While The Boy slept in Saturday morning, I worked on the blog and for my job and watched Fantasia. I really wanted to watch Aladdin, like everyone else, but Fantasia was a good option too (good for the baby, right? Starting to send some classical music to his brain). The speaker cracks me up, because in more than one intro, he pauses, almost like he doesn't know the camera is on, for a very long time before he gets going. Also, the lighting in this movie and transitions into the animation doesn't get enough credit.

5. Craft-shopping- We drove over to the East suburby side to buy craft supplies for some of our various nursery and life plans. We used to live like a mile from a Michael's (and we walked there once, for the record), and I miss being able to go impulse buy yarn or strange glues. I also enjoyed the Boy realizing just how expensive professional level paints are. I think he will continue to encourage me to be an amateur.

6. Pianos in Seattle Parks-You can read the official statement on this King County initiative to put pianos (and players) in the parks here. I loved coming across one (with robot arms no less) while we walked around Green Lake on Saturday. This is one of the swimming areas at the lake (very Two Mile Run-ish), so people could listen to music while they swam or ate ice cream. That's a good day. I love this city already.

7. Waffles- As Eddie Cantor says, we were making them. We thought we were having an adventure day, but waffles and remaking our to do list took Sunday in a totally different direction.

8. Drilling down the Pergola, Painting over the Stain Stains, Donating a Car's Worth of Stuff, Fighting the Spiders, and Just Generally Making Progress- We did a bunch of the elbow greasing needed in our house (and nothing cost any money, which was a nice change). We finished off our work outside, and we finally started tackling the catchall basement. We gave away a ton of stuff that we moved here, but doesn't currently serve a purpose, and I think tonight we will organize what's left onto the plastic shelves we bought. I still get sentimental about things, but I can't deny it is a good feeling to debulk our house in the name of making our house a manageable home. It felt good to do another round of work, and I am looking forward to when our to do list isn't so epic.

9. High school drama- Sometimes, you really wonder if you did high school wrong, because you weren't twitter feuding with anyone. I am not sure I was even ever regular feuding with anyone. I think my life needs more feuding. At the very least, if you are going to feud with someone, let me know so I can enjoy the drama. Just fascinating.

Bumpwatch- 26 Weeks

How Far Along: 26 Weeks. The baby is the size of a head of lettuce next time, I am finding a pregnancy tracker that  marks your progress in terms of desserts.  His eyes are forming, he is growing Alfeo superlashes (TM), and he seems to be on a semi-regular dancing schedule.

Best Moment of the Week: We started getting some positive feedback from people about being excited for the shower which is this coming weekend. That's good, because before I was only getting people telling me they weren't coming, which currently really upsets me more than it would usually (I am just a wimpy cookie now\). Anyway, we have been really excited to receive some of the first gifts for BBG, and we are really looking forward to seeing people from home.

Most Interesting Prego Quirk: You definitely expand and swell as you get bigger so fast, but not necessarily where you expect. All of me is starting to head outward, except for my hips, which remain the same. Now, I am no doctor, but I think in terms of an exit strategy, this might turn out to be a pretty serious problem. Hoping they get on board (and everything else takes it easy) soon.

I Would Really Like Some: I found these little lemon cupcake bites last week at a QFC that were AMAZING and I have thought about them ever since. I would send The Boy to go get some, but I can't deny this isn't a pregnancy thing, it's just a normal "I ate something yummy and now I want more" thing. I have thought about it though, since he really has had an easy run of things thus far. He has only once left the house to get me a snack, and I think that was more me enabling him than anything else.

Bizarro Thing No One Warned me About:  Your body basically feels like a cantilever, where your stomach keeps heading outward, seemingly defying gravity. No one told me that at the ends of long walks or a good workout, the place that can get the sorest is basically your underbelly, which makes sense because there isn't really anything holding it up but the balance of the rest of your body. It's just a strange feeling to even have an underbelly, but it makes it even odder that it is the area that feels it the most.

And The Boy?: We have essentially reached a standoff about the name, where we are down to 2 options one of which each of us likes better. I thought we would just wait until BBG comes to assign the name, but The Boy told me this week he thinks we will decide in the next few weeks, and we have just been waiting to see if the other person changes their mind. Deep down, I know he will win, because he takes a stand on so few things and because I would like him to feel excited about the name (plus, I still like them both, so it will be a win no matter what).

Looking Forward to: Going home this week for almost a week, our baby shower, and our wedding anniversary. I am excited to see so many of the people we love at the shower, but I also get nervous to be the center of attention, but we tried to keep it really small, so it shouldn't feel like I am being stared down by a crowd.

Quote of the Week- Going Home for the Last Time in 2014

“Living in a small town...is like living in a large family of rather uncongenial relations. Sometimes it’s fun, and sometimes it’s perfectly awful, but it’s always good for you. People in large towns are like only-children.” -Joyce Dennys

"We're a long, long way from home. Home's a long, long way from us." -Bruce Springsteen
