Unmined Costume Inspiration- The Grand Budapest Hotel

Alright, I probably won't win an award for this, because it is new this year, but Wes Anderson movies are always costume inspiration goldmines. Also, I would just love to see more men out in mustaches and purple formal wear (though if you have bird-like/Brody-like features at all, you owe it to the world to go as the villain). I also think Agatha might be a fun costume for a girl? Anyway, here are some inspiration pictures.

3 Costumes I Think We Can Retire

from usmagazine.com

from bloglovin.com

from the36thavenue.com
1. Native American costumes (even worse, sexy Native American costumes)- You could apply this to any racial/ cultural appropriation nonsense. If you wouldn't go out in blackface, why would you go out looking like this? You are embarrassing yourself and caricaturing multiple cultures at once. I know that this is still a hot button issue, but if you want to go out in nearly nothing, there are so many options that don't have to be disrespectful of anyone. Just icky. Plus, we have all seen it a million times, so you are both offensive and boring- time to turn it in.

2. Audrey Hepburn (specifically, Breakfast at Tiffany's Audrey Hepburn)- I am not against tutus of any kind, but I don't get the Audrey Hepburn thing, and I am even more perplexed by how many girls she appeals to in a deep, yet totally superficial way. Is it just wanting to wear the tiara? The strange juxtaposition between classy and trashy? That everyone already owns a black dress? I really don't get it, but I do think if you have to do Audrey, at least try Roman Holiday Audrey or if you are really ambitions, let's see a sexy My Fair Lady costume. Large hats are coming up for a real comeback.

3. The Joker- If I could, I would hit some serious breaks on all these played out superhero costumes, but this feels the most egregious. I mean, how many years ago was that movie? Just be someone else. If you want to wear makeup, and who can blame you, it is super fun, come up with something else. This one has been done so many times at this point.

1970s tiered lace wedding dress: Gypsy-style Dress of the Week

Dear Reader,
Hot on the heels of those pretty gypsy images, this beautiful original 1970s wedding dress has to be our Vintage Wedding Dress of the Week...
Romantic 1970s lace wedding dress, £695 including full-length slip
This is such a romantic look, and a really rare find. With its complexion-flattering cream lace, and off-the-shoulder styling with delicate ribbon straps, it perfectly suits a boho vintage-gypsy-style wedding.
On- or off-the-shoulder? Both look stunning. 1970s wedding dress £695
It would look wonderful with a waist-enhancing sash trimmed in flowers. And as you can see above, it's equally fabulous worn on the shoulder for a bride who prefers a little more coverage. I'd love to see this dress accessorised with a flower crown, or perhaps with tumbling romantic tresses...
This gorgeous dress is available now, priced £695 including full-length slip.
See you next week, with some more lovely vintage gypsy ideas...
Love
Helena

Unmined Costume Inspiration- Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe

You can only go this route if you are absolutely sure that you are the coolest f-ing person you know (or I guess if you want to try to identify those people). This is one of the most important art friendships of all time, and everything you read about them and their relationships with each other and others is kind of mind-boggling. It might be a fun costume for two friends who aren't necessarily a couple.Robert Mapplethorpe was one of the most iconic (and definitely most controversial) photographers of the 20th century, and Smith was a musician, a poet, and his muse.

This one is slightly trickier because their look is iconic, but not necessarily a singular vision. The most iconic picture of Mapplethorpe is either his late in life self-portrait or a self-portrait he took with a bull whip (I think it would be difficult to go out that way). The photograph that immediately comes to mind when I think of Patti Smith is this:

So come on, who doesn't want to go out with amazing hair and suspenders? Why have suspenders not come back for women? Here are some other pictures of them together:

What you Need (Probably a lot of the same things either way)
Appropriate Hair (think bangs or feathering)
Very tight jeans
Leather
Black and White, masculine style
Hats
A Vintage looking camera (think mid 70's to early 80's)
Most Importantly, a kind of proud look of indifference and total badassery

3 Classic Halloween Costumes that are Underappreciated

If you are a trick or treater coming to our house, these costumes are sure to get more candy out of me. Nothing wrong with the classics.

1. Ghosts- Come on, wouldn't you be kind of thrilled to see someone out in a sheet? I think that would be pretty adorable. If someone wants to step their game up too, who can blame them. I am pretty bored with the zombie thing ("You watch Walking Dead? Me too! You have opinions about things? Me too! You breath air? Me too!"), but I think some solid ghost action would be awesome. It also is one that people can step up, but the old sheet is so happy!

2. Mummies- These are my favorite, and they never get any attention. They are probably the least sexy scary thing, so they really haven't made the same big comeback. But, I like these costumes anyway.

3. Aliens- Mostly, this is in honor of my Dad, whose mother dyed his skin green with food coloring to be an alien (I hope this is right! Jolly Green Giant would also be appropriate), and it lasted for days. But really, a simple Gort costume would make my day.

Unmined Costume Inspiration- Albrecht Durer

Albrecht Durer is one of those artists that even if you don't know much about art, you would probably recognize some of his work (the bunny, the rhino). Not only is the man one of the most talented of all time, a proponent for the modern concept of copyright, and the King of the Northern Renaissance (given this title only by me), but he is also damn sexy and weirdly on some trends for someone dead hundreds of years. So, if you happen to already be a hipster, he might be the perfect choice for you.

from www.oneonta.edu
from en.wikipedia.org

What You Need

Curly long hair, given either by God or a Wig
Fake Fur lined coat
A Beard
A Paintbrush or Durer print, if you want to give people a clue
A Very manly floppy hat
A Generally Dour look on your face and beautiful hands

So, go old school and laugh at the fools dressed like Andy Warhol (it's done already!)
